What type of device is a modem?

A modem is defined as a device that modulates and demodulates signals, which is essential for enabling internet access. This capability allows digital data from a computer to be converted into an analog signal for transmission over telephone lines or cable systems (modulation) and vice versa, where incoming analog signals are converted back to digital form for the computer to understand (demodulation).

In practice, when you connect your computer or router to the internet, the modem acts as the interface between the local network and the internet service provider’s network, facilitating communication both ways. This is crucial for various online activities, from browsing websites to streaming videos.
